Internship Overview:
CSIR is offering two internship opportunities within the Financial Services portfolio, specifically in the Payroll and Bursary Administration department. This internship aims to provide graduates with practical work experience by involving them in accounting and administrative tasks. These positions are based in Pretoria.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Transactions: Process financial transactions in the bursary administration and payroll environment under guidance to ensure accuracy and compliance with policies, guidelines, and legislation.
- Bursary Administration: Assist in processing monthly allowances for bursars and study fees upon receipt of invoices from academic institutions, ensuring payments align with the award letter.
- Bursary Payments: Help process bursary payments based on approved Workflow requests and prepare bursary agreements between CSIR and employees.
- Monthly Transactions: Prepare and process monthly transactions in line with legislation, CSIR policies, and procedures.
- Accounting Accuracy: Ensure accurate accounting of transactions based on valid substantiating documents for supervisor review.
- Reconciliations: Prepare monthly reconciliations of study/bursary/payroll control and suspense accounts to identify and address long-outstanding transactions.
- Stakeholder Queries: Follow up and resolve outstanding queries from stakeholders, or escalate them to the Management Accountant as needed.
- Record Keeping: Maintain records of all relevant documents in adherence to the CSIR document retention policy and legislative requirements.
- Compliance: Comply with month-end and year-end processes to ensure timely completion of transactions, processes, and reports.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
- Education: A three-year Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Accounting Knowledge: Good understanding and ability to implement basic accounting principles.
- IT Skills: Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Legislative Knowledge: Understanding of relevant legislation, including the Income Tax Act and VAT Act.
- Detail-Oriented: Ability to pay attention to detail, work under pressure, and manage stress effectively.
- Administrative Skills: Good office administrative and record-keeping skills.
- Analytical Skills: Good analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Time Management: Strong time management and planning skills.
- Communication: Effective communication, listening, and professional writing skills.
- Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in large teams.
- Confidentiality: Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in performing duties.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work outside of normal working hours when required.
