About the News Internship
Jacaranda FM (Owned by Kagiso Media) is searching for two news interns to join their vibrant and dynamic news team. Jacaranda has partnered with a community radio station, Voice of Wits (VowFM) and provides broadcast skills development for youth interested in acquiring radio experience required by the broadcasting industry.
The interns will rotate every six weeks between Jacaranda FM (Midrand) and VowFM (Johannesburg) for 12 months. They will be required to travel between the two stations. Interns should not be committed to other fields of study as they will need to attend various short courses in radio journalism.
Job Description
The internship is designed to ensure that interns learn about the various aspects and operations of a newsroom.
At Jacaranda FM, interns will develop skills in:
- Assisting in the general operations of a newsroom
- Assisting journalists in the compilation of their stories
- Reporting from the field and working on the news desk
- Learning practical skills in various areas of the news department.
At VoWFM, interns will develop skills in:
- Compiling and reading daily bulletins
- Reporting from the field
- Packaging stories for current affairs programmes
- Actively participating in day-to-day news and current affairs programming
- Updating social media with news content
- Undertaking short courses with the Wits Radio Academy.
Job Requirements
- Qualification in Journalism or related field (Bachelor’s Degree or 3-year National Diploma)
- Valid driver’s license or in the process of obtaining one
- Good command of the English language, preferably bilingual in Afrikaans and English
- Quality writing and voicing scripts for radio
- Checking facts, accuracy, and quality of stories
- Operating studio and field recording and production equipment
- Minimal editing and multi-track mixing experience needed.
